SERVICES THIS SUNDAY AT ST PETER'S ON WILLIS
This Sunday (the 27th of May 2012) is the Day of Pentecost. To find out more about Pentecost see our "feast days" part of what's on this week.
As it is the Day of Pentecost there will be a combined service In the evening (at 7pm) being St Peter's, St John's and St Mary of the Angels, which will be held at St John's Church (cnr. Willis and Dixon Sts). It promises to be a great service with Colin Gibson's Cantata The Spirit Within as its basis. There will be a supper afterwards. These combined services are always a lot of fun so please come along (you don't have to belong to one of the denominations involved to attend).
Bishop Richard Randerson is Priest-in-Charge of St Peter's. His sermons can be found here.
Our Deacon is Rev'd Dr Ron Atkins. Ron speaks on the first Sunday of every month. Sermons given by Ron can be found here.
Sermons from visiting clergy can be found here.

What is an "ordinary Sunday?" Commonplace? Nothing special happening? Or a fancy way for saying rank. Pick rank and you get a cyber chocolate fish. "Ordinary" in this case comes from the phase "ordinal numbers". Where cardinal numbers tell us how many, ordinal numbers tell us the rank (1st, 2nd, ...)
What is happening in the Church this Sunday? What is happening at your place this Sunday? In both cases, more often than not, we will be doing our regular thing. In our case. we gather together around a table where share a symbolic meal, we have some times of silence, we listen to our book being read and we reflect on what we are going to be doing in the coming week; then we have a cup of coffee. Sound like your day? What are the important rituals in your life?

First day of the week? Why do we call Sunday "the first day of the week"? My guess is that most people treat Monday as the first day of the week because that is the day they go back to work. Saturday and Sunday are the "kick back" days at the end of the week, the days before they have to start the next week and go through the whole cycle again. For those of us who work in the weekend and take Monday off, this "week beginning on Monday" assumption seems a little strange
From very early on, "the first day of the week", Sunday, was a working day for everyone, but for Christians it was a time (in the evening, after work) to celebrate the special Christian shared meal and hear stories about Jesus. It came to be called "the Lord's day". Holidays were a rarity. Each Sunday is a little Easter and every meal is a little "Last Supper".
