Joining the choir
The choir is always on the lookout for new members of secondary school age or above. A knowledge of music-reading is preferred, but help will be given to those whose reading skills are not as developed as others’. Our primary requirements:
- The ability to sing in tune.
- The ability to blend with others.
- The ability to hold one’s own voice line
- Diligent attendance at rehearsals and services.
In the Anglican tradition, choir membership is open to anyone, regardless of personal belief. As leaders of worship, all members must be willing to say or sing all parts of the liturgy assigned to them, and to develop an understanding of their role in the ongoing worship of the Church.
In the past there have been options for children to sing. There could be so again if there is sufficient interest from both children and parents.
What’s in it for me?
- Good aerobic exercise – singing assists with toning lots of muscles, when done properly.
- Stress relief – many people find that they feel more relaxed after a rehearsal.
- Good times – being with a group of like-minded people and exploring music of all periods and many styles.
- A chance to sing other places – the choir is occasionally invited to other churches for special services. We have sung annually at St Paul’s Cathedral since 2008.
What is the commitment?
- One rehearsal each Thursday night throughout the year (except January) from 7:30-9 pm.
- One Sunday service at 10 am throughout the year (February – December) except as specified.
- Other services as advised (particularly at Christmas, Easter and other festivals of the church’s liturgical year –usually about 10).
