SABBATH MEDITATIONS

St Peter's on Willis is proud to announce the release of Sabbath Meditations - a cd of Jewish Organ music played by Dianne Halliday on the fully restored William Hill & Son organ.

Reviewer Jennifer Chou writes " ... Jewish organ music that is charming and delightful, solemn and peaceful, powerful and captivating.

Sabbath Meditation by Jacob Beimel is intimate, melodious and peaceful.  Two preludes from Four Preludes on Jewish Melodies by American composer William Bolcom are most refreshing and delightful to listen to, simple and beautiful ..."

VINTAGE RECORDINGS FROM ST PETER'S ON WILLIS

We are delighted to announce the release of three cds featuring Tony Jennings and the Choir of St Peters.  Each of the three recordings shown below was individually released as an LP between 1966 and 1971.  They have been remastered onto CD as part of the fundraising campaign to restore the pipe organ after an arson attack in 2008.  Anthony Jennings was at the time of the first release (Cantate Domino) a music student at Victoria University of Wellington, studying with Maxwell Fernie. The choir included a group of university students as well as parishioners.  The other recordings were made after Tony had done some overseas study and returned to Wellington.  Shortly after the release of these recordings, he moved to Auckland to take up a position at Holy Trinity Cathedral, and subsequently at Auckland University.

Music for the church year

Welcome to a sampler of hymns and anthems from Advent through Pentecost, which does not overlap with Christus Natus Est. Most of the hymns come from Hymns Ancient and Modern, and the remaining anthems reflect the interest in Renaissance polyphony that was beginning to grab musicians in the 1970’s..

Christus Natus Est

This recording focuses on music for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany.  It should not be thought of as a set of all the familiar carols, because it isn’t.  The bulk of the repertoire comes traditional sources, many arranged by composers unknown to the general public.  There are also performances of hymns pertinent to the seasons.

Cantate Domino

The music list for this disc is fairly general, except for the first and last tracks.  The changes on 6 or 8 bells are performed on the bells of St Peter’s, but are chimed rather than pealed. Unfortunately the construction of the tower itself and the layout of the bells within it don’t allow for a full peal.
