Life is a journey

This is a very powerful metaphor because it taps into a whole lot of stuff and lets us see things differently and get motivated to make changes in our life.

This picture has become a New Zealand icon. It shows an old, highly respected, Maori woman, Dame Whina Cooper with one of her grandchildren.  In 1975, they started out on a long walk (a hikoi) from the top of New Zealand down to the capital Wellington to protest further sale of Maori land.

For Christians, the call to follow Jesus is spoken of as a journey with him up to Jerusalem: “take up your cross and follow me”. Originally that destination was important because it was the centre of economic and political power that was being challenged by Jesus.

For us, the journey itself, rather than the destination, is what is important.  It is the people we meet along the way who teach, sustain and challenge us, rather than arriving at a particular place, that shapes us and gives point to our life. The little girl in the photo doesn’t know what lies around the corner but she knows whose hand she’s holding.

A Map of Journeys

A place to share your stories or the discoveries you have made about life

Food for the journey

A place to share what can sustain us on the journey – places, readings, sayings, music, practices, and spiritual masters. What have you discovered that works for you?

Traveling light

Fewer calories, more flavour. "Carry no staff, no purse ..." What is the baggage we are carrying that is best left behind?
